Q & A with Yasmin Grigaliunas

What’s the story behind your business?

School Hours started as an idea we had late in 2010 when we noticed the flexibility we were offered in our roles was not common in most workplaces across Australia. The research began and it soon became apparent that being able to maintain a professional career whilst also having the flexibility to raise a family was not something that most Australian parents were able to achieve. We share a strong passion to change this trend, so we set about creating School Hours so we could find those “Family Friendly” employers out there and connect them with qualified and skilled professionals, who also happen to be parents. The most exciting aspect of the journey we’re embarking on is that we are in the business of helping people, something we’ve both always been extremely passionate about. We are excited about helping like-minded parents find employment opportunities that allow them to achieve a good balance between earning a living and raising their children and we’re equally as excited about helping Australian Employers connect with the parent market. When offered a little flexibility, parents are among the best employees any employer could hope for – hardworking, dedicated, loyal and efficient.

What was your first job?

A pizza delivery driver. I was the only female driver on staff for quite some time.

When you decided to start your own business, what was your big “why”?

The ‘why’ moment for me happened during my flexible full-time role with my previous employer. I realised months into my new role that I was able to work less hours and achieve more while working from home. When I started to converse with other professionals about it, I realised how ‘lucky’ I was to have this opportunity. Most of my friends had to either return to work full-time, or compromise their career opportunities due to the lack of flexibility in the workplace. My husband and I both worked flexibly for the same organisation and they trusted us to deliver the outcomes. We both worked from home during the early years of having our children and it was apparent to us that this was more than just a ‘benefit’ of working for a great employer. This was life changing, positive for our family, productive for the business and a game changer, if only more organisations freely advertised and promoted their opportunities. It’s been life changing in so many ways

What have you had to give up?

The main thing I’ve had to give up to be honest, is the comfort and security of working for an employer who pays wages, super and other various entitlements. It’s a small price to pay for the freedom and flexibility of working on my own business, helping others achieve a balance between professional and personal happiness. Plus, the extra time with our children has been priceless! Money doesn’t buy memories, it’s amazing how when you willingly walk away from it, you can see what life is really about. Time is irreplaceable and priceless, so helping other families find their own little ‘extra’ time through connecting them with workplaces providing flexible options is so very rewarding.

Your proudest achievement to date?

I was responsible for some very large (and at the time ‘record breaking’) tenders in my previous role, which still rate high on my achievements in business to date. I worked in a very competitive male dominated industry and I still remember the challenges that were ahead of me to ‘climb the corporate ladder’. Instead of thinking about it, I never made an issue of the gender imbalance, instead I just put my head down, worked harder than I ever thought was manageable and I rose to the top despite the odds being against me.

What are some of the most exciting projects you’ve worked on?

I project managed the implementation and launch of an online retail store for my previous employer. It’s now an incredibly successful part of the business, outselling the bricks and mortar stores almost across the board. This was one of the projects I worked on while working flexibly, which included a lot of time working in my home office or another remote location, providing me with the ability to remain employed full-time, while still having a balance with my young family.

What would you tell your younger self not to do?

Don’t sweat the small stuff, and it’s all small stuff.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, either way you’re right!.

What’s next for you and your business?

We launched our job board in April this year, which is very exciting. It’s a niche site, which provides jobseekers with access to genuine career opportunities from organisations supporting flexibility in the workplace. We have been a trusted resource on workplace flexibility for a few years now, so this was always a natural progression for our business and our customers.
